Amazon is the last thing to jump into the secure messaging charger. The motherboard reports that Amazon has acquired Wichr, better known as the Democrats of the safe Chat platform used after the Hack of DNC 2016. The Internet giant sees it as a complement to Amazon’s web services that provides companies and Governments an easy solution for remote work conversations, including video and voice.
AWS is offering “effective immediate”, effective and existing services, Wichr customers should not wait for a change.
The movement is a big problem for AWS. Wichr already has military, customs and border protection, and other significant organizations as clients. This could help Amazon compensate for the loss of the Jedi contract and, otherwise, will give an advantage to negotiate government agreements. If an agency already has an Amazon license thanks to Wichr, it could be more willing to buy other services.
However, it also raises possibilities for daily uses. Segure messaging is already thriving in the consumer world between platforms such as whatsapp, imessage, signal and telegram. The purchase of Wichr is far from being a guarantee that Amazon will offer a direct competitor to those chat services (Amazon has not said anything to this effect), but the company could enter space with relatively little work.
